Recently I had the privilege of being invited to a test screening of a film made locally here in Chicago and the first question I asked myself after watching that pain was as follows -
"Who in their right mind decides to Baccarat played hundreds of thousands if not a million or more in the movie condemned?
After an investigation I do understand that sometimes less when dad or mom kiddies love to do more with their lives than bitch and complain about a New BMW, they have to write them a check no matter what Hollywood to finance their dreams.
Good this is the problem. No more "Hollywood" infrastructure that is linear and everything is done according to much homework and having a strong sales team in place before you make your film.
Fortunately for these films Unfortunately, did not do them.
Fresh out of film school they automatically believe broke every rule of writing before they write must be made no matter how horrible it is. Now, I'm not knocking down the film "I'm just saying that in 2009 her and you do not make movies that seem to have a good case for a 1992 film Meet Chuck Norris Jeff Fahey (If someone Jeff Fahey also remember, I'll owe you something - not sure what)
Anyways, with a BA in film and bad writing, those made that very first film makers and producers time to make. They cast actors that they are fans out, and no actors that can help sell a film.
They also had no help of an agent registration of foreign sales to tell them, well - if you use these actors, you'll get so and so dollars from Burma and Ivory Coast.
Worse, lead actors they used, one of them was a regular season without a cable in a series of name recognition, the second bullet was a major local player who nobody has heard off outside Chicago, and lead the third was a former actor who was named for the fifth movie minutes that they are giving top billing to.
And they do not use the legal adviser, but forms downloaded off the internet.
Recently, when one of the producers said they did not get into Sundance, I suggested that maybe a call to the three top agencies in Hollywood to help rep the film (no matter how bad it is), instead of playing the lottery and supplement their applications for every film festival that calls itself a film festival.
His response was looking and acting like he was going to cut my throat if I dare to give advice.
Heck, I even gave names of some foreign sales agents for to help him sell the film and he looked at me like I was anti-Christ and his dreams and negative.
Okay, so what is the lesson of the day?
Film festival and distribution channels are very close in getting a return on equity in an indie film is next to impossible if you do not do homework.
So here goes
1. Select a scenario that can be sold internationally, even if it has not received the film festival large.
2. If you have investors, make sure you have a private placement memorandum that gives them their Section 181 benefits and sales state film tax credits as part of the ROI on the capital.
3. get a brand name entertainment lawyer to help assess of your existence
4. get a manufacturers rep and / or foreign sales agent before jumping film
5. Get players who people in Greece or Byelorus may know (if you can get an agreement ahead of time theater interior and not worry having the potential to be in your film)
6. Plan and prepare a good way to spread online so you can get at least 100,000 people download your movie from 9.995 to 19.95
And off course, pray, eat, love hug a tree, chant, and hope the stars are aligned for you to succeed.
