What should I put in my Art Portfolio?
I am looking to apply for a college of art. I'm actually currently in college, but I'm not sure what to bring that dynamic perspective but my own spice things .. You also need to add things as abstract and stuff like that? In my wallet that I wont send to it (because I know a messenger is all suppost to be copies of the originals) could only use my orginals a binder, should i decorate the cover to show my artistic skills as well? Just a few questions must be answered! Thanks
Decorate your wallet? No! A simple field black folder with your art carefully stashed inside is all you needed. You do not want portfolio your notebook looking like a junior high! Keep it clean, keep it simple and keep it professional. If there is no strong evidence of artistic ability or creativity within the portfolio, it certainly will not help you to decorate out, is it? I am simply amazed how many people here ask what they should put the school their art portfolios! Each school requirements may be different and there is no "one size fits all" answer. Why not just e-mail admissions departments of schools are interested and ask what their portfolio requirements / suggestions are? step towards getting a higher education in any field is learning to ask questions! On average I would expect of an art school is looking for someone who has a mastery of basic skills of art, like perspective, figure drawing, composition, values, and color. I expect they want to see the original studies from life, a couple of "finished" drawings, and examples of paintings you've done. Does not include more than two years (for example, leave out high class work school!), any work done by images copyright (not anime or posters obama-like!), and only your strong pieces. Put yourself in the place of commission Admission: what to ask? Suppose there are 1000 applicants for 50 places the available art class at the entrance. Who gets in? Artist with a portfolio of pencil drawings of dragons, anime, and Hot Rod cars? Good sketch artist, but they are all 4-5 years old and works as present new? Student with some sketches of still life, some landscapes done from life, a figure some sketches from a life drawing session and a couple of oil or acrylic paintings? Your portfolio should reflect curiosity and investigation of media, subjects, and ideas that you have been exposed to over the years. It should detect that you are interested to work really hard to learn concepts, methods, history, and they will be teaching techniques, and showing that work regularly in your art. If you're really familiar artistic achievements of the past, it would also be appropriate to include a brief resume / bio activities sharing programs such as summer art, exhibitions are to be elected, and any awards you received. This is about the only time I believe it would be appropriate to include the old information, and info from school days.
