The picturesque Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand is visited by a large number of tourists every year for its scenic landscape and pleasant weather. Even though Dehradun is a popular hill resort, some of its institutions in the city such as the Forest Research Institute - the only institution of its kind in Asia, the headquarters of the Oil and Natural Commission, the Gurudwara built by Guru Ram Raj during the reign of Aurangzeb in the Dhamanwala have brought world wide acclaim. Dehra Dun is well linked by rail and road with Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Lucknow and Varanasi which make it ideal for students to migrate to some of the known educational Centers in Northern India to study. An attractive place to pursue education, right from nursery to the post graduation and doctoral levels, Dehradun is dotted with a number of schools, colleges and universities.
Dehradun is home to a number of posh residential as well as day schools. The schools in the city have gained affiliation from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) or National Open Schools. Amit wanted to join the Indian Military academy. He was fond of the army right from childhood because everybody in the family always saw him play with toy guns and tanks as a child. When he grew up a little, we watched him read commando comics. He was focused on his aim. He wanted to join the army. He would sit and watch any advertisement or movie to do with battle and warfare, and his desire to enter the armed forces was becoming stronger. It showed in his close military crop, his camouflage pants, his daily exercise and gym lessons and in his entire outlook towards life.
The Indian Military academy announced its usual admission session for the year, and Amit felt he had groomed himself enough to apply for it. The same year, Amit's father was posted abroad and Amit had to apply for a school in the US, but he never let go of his dream. Years later, Amit had become a Sergeant in the US army. The family was surprised, but deep down all of us knew, he would make it to the army some day because he was so consistent in his efforts. Amit's father remembered the time when he searched for a school for his son from some of the best schools in Dehradun which were: The Doon School, Brightlands School, Welham Boys School, Carman Residential and Day School, Constancia School and The Asian School but years later he was happy for his son- His son had done him proud in a foreign land.
